Wine of the Week: 2013 Competitor Cabernet Sauvignon

The Competitor.JPG

COUNTRY: United States

REGION: Lodi, California

VARIETAL: Cabernet Sauvignon

RATING: 91

Lodi is located in the northern part of California's Central Valley—south of Sacramento and northeast of San Francisco. The region has been growing grapes since the mid 1800's and is considered by many to be one of the leading Californian producers of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Sauvignon Blanc. Lately, the region has been producing some really exciting Cabs. The 2013 Competitor is no exception.

Due to my highly competitive nature, I was immediately drawn to this wine. For any of you athletes out there, the label alone will entice you to purchase a few bottles. The Competitor was born out of Wine Library's search for a $40-value Cabernet that they could white label and offer to their customers for $19.99. They essentially pitted a bunch of high-quality red wines against each other and The Competitor Cabernet Sauvignon was victorious. It competed. It prevailed. It is a wine that stands out above the others.

I highly recommend you go to winelibrary.com and see what wines they have to offer. I've been ordering wines from Wine Library since December 2014 and it has become my second favorite e-commerce site (Amazon is still numero uno). Wine Library has a great selection of wines from around the world, great deals, and a ton of valuable content. If you haven't bought from them yet, give it a try and let me know how it goes. They had no involvement with this post. I'm just a big fan of the site.

Let's get into the wine....

TASTING NOTES

The Competitor's nose is extremely aromatic: cherries, raspberries and black pepper for days. The taste is pure awesomeness—jammy, tannic (but balanced), chocolatey and silky smooth. The finish is lonnnngggg. You got to love a wine that lingers on your palate for a while, right?

This is the kind of wine you could sip on all night without food or you can pair it with red sauce pastas, pizza, red meats, and roasted vegetables. We paired it with cavatelli and meatballs, pizza, and salad from Mama Santa's.

We decanted this wine for a few hours and the extra oxygen only helped solidify my thoughts on The Competitor...it's a winner.

I think you'll love this wine as much as I did. If you taste The Competitor and enjoy it, please let me know in the comment section below. Thanks for reading.
